Brake Pedal Position / Accelerator Pedal Position Incompatible

Severity
High
Driving
Drivable — book it in

The module has seen the brake and the accelerator pressed together in a way it does not accept. Modern vehicles include a brake override: if both pedals are pressed, the brake wins and the throttle is closed. This code records that the condition occurred - and there are two very different explanations, one harmless and one not.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Check whether anything is fouling the pedals - a loose floor mat, an object under the pedal, or a mat fitted on top of the original. That is the cause you must rule out first, because it is the one that can hold the accelerator down.
  2. Check whether the brake lights work and go out when the pedal is released. A brake switch stuck on makes the module believe you are braking constantly.
  3. Ask about driving style. Left-foot braking, or resting a foot on the brake pedal, sets this code with nothing wrong at all.
  4. Watch both pedal positions on the live data screen while operating each pedal separately.
  5. Check the accelerator pedal moves freely and returns fully.
