O2 Sensor Out of Range During Deceleration (Bank 1 Sensor 1)

Severity

Driving
Drivable — book it in

The upstream oxygen sensor on bank 1 gave a reading outside the expected range while the car was decelerating. When you lift off, most engines cut fuel entirely, so the exhaust should read very lean for a moment - a sensor that does not show that is either slow, contaminated, or being fooled by an exhaust leak.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Watch the sensor on the live data screen while lifting off at speed. It should swing sharply lean as fuel is cut - a lazy or absent swing is the fault.
  2. Check for exhaust leaks upstream of the sensor.
  3. Consider a leaking injector. Fuel arriving when the module has cut it produces exactly this, and it is a very different repair from a sensor.
  4. Compare the two banks. Only one affected points at that sensor or that side's exhaust.
  5. Check for silicone contamination if sealant was used recently.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
