The water in fuel sensor signal is reading high - typically shorted to voltage or with a lost earth.
Possible causes
- CommonWater genuinely collected in the fuel filter or water trap
- CommonWater trap never drained at service
- CommonFailed water in fuel sensor
- CommonCorroded connector - the sensor sits in or near the fuel filter housing
- PossibleContaminated fuel from a poor-quality supply
- PossibleCondensation from repeatedly running the tank very low

What to check, in order
- Drain the water trap regardless of what the sensor says. It takes minutes, it costs nothing, and it removes the possibility that this code is telling the truth.
- Inspect the connector at the filter housing for corrosion.
- Check the wiring between the sensor and the module.
- Check when the fuel filter was last changed.
- Ask where the vehicle was last fuelled, if there is any suspicion of contaminated fuel.
