Secondary Air Injection System Control "B" Circuit High

Severity

Driving

Secondary air injection control circuit "B" is reading high - typically shorted to voltage, or a relay that will not release. This one matters more than the low variant, because a circuit stuck high can leave the pump running when it should have stopped. A pump designed to run for a minute at a time does not tolerate running continuously.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Listen for the pump. If it is still running once the engine is warm, remove the relay to stop it while you diagnose - a pump running continuously overheats and destroys itself.
  2. Check whether the high reading persists with the relay removed.
  3. Swap the relay. Welded contacts are the most common cause.
  4. Inspect the connector for corrosion bridging pins, and the harness for a chafe point against a supply wire.
  5. Check whether the fuel trims have shifted. Air pumped into the exhaust continuously makes the oxygen sensors read lean, so the module adds fuel it does not need.
