Injector Control Pressure Too High - Engine Off

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The injector control pressure is still high after the engine has been switched off. Pressure should bleed away; that it has not means something is holding it, usually a stuck regulator valve.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Check the pressure regulator valve - a stuck valve is the usual cause of pressure that will not bleed down.
  2. Watch the reported pressure after switch-off. It should fall away steadily.
  3. Check the engine oil level, condition and grade first. These systems use engine oil at very high pressure to fire the injectors, so oil that is low, degraded or the wrong grade causes faults here before anything else does.
  4. Inspect the connector for oil contamination - a leaking sensor seal fills its own plug.
  5. Watch the reported pressure on the live data screen during cranking and at idle.
  6. Look for external oil leaks around the high-pressure rail and its fittings.
  7. Read all codes. A pressure-too-low code alongside a sensor code usually means the pressure is genuinely low and the sensor is right.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
