O2 Sensor Reference Voltage Circuit Low (Bank 1 Sensor 1)

Severity
Medium
Driving
Drivable — book it in

The reference voltage for the upstream oxygen sensor on bank 1 is reading low - typically shorted to earth, an open circuit, or a sensor loading it down. Without a correct reference the sensor's mixture readings are unusable and the module will ignore them.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Unplug the sensor and check whether the low reading persists at the harness. If it recovers, the sensor is the fault.
  2. Inspect the connector for water and corrosion.
  3. Check the harness for chafe damage where it runs near the exhaust.
  4. Check whether both banks have faulted, which would point at a shared reference.
  5. Clear the wiring before buying a sensor.
