Fuel Pump "B" Control Circuit/Open

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

An open circuit in the fuel pump "B" control. Some vehicles use two pumps - a lift pump in the tank feeding a high-pressure pump, or a second pump for a saddle-shaped tank - and this is the control for the second one.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Listen for the pump. Switch the ignition on without cranking and listen at the fuel tank - a working pump runs for a second or two. Silence is a clear finding and costs nothing.
  2. Check the fuse and swap the relay with an identical one from elsewhere in the box.
  3. Check for battery voltage at the pump connector while the pump should be running.
  4. Check the pump earth - a corroded earth produces the same symptoms as a failed pump.
  5. Inspect the wiring under the vehicle for corrosion and impact damage.
