Intake Air Heater System Performance

Severity
Low
Driving

The intake air heater system as a whole is not performing as expected. The module heated the intake air and did not see the temperature rise it wanted, which points at the elements, the supply to them, or the sensor measuring the result.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Watch the intake air temperature while the heater runs on a cold start - it should rise noticeably.
  2. Check the intake air temperature sensor reads plausibly before blaming the heaters.
  3. Test on a genuinely cold engine. In warm weather a diesel will usually start acceptably without the intake heater, which is why these faults go unnoticed until winter.
  4. Check the fuse or fusible link and the relay. These circuits carry very high current and their connections suffer for it.
  5. Inspect the heater terminals for corrosion and heat damage.
  6. Measure the heater element resistance against specification.
  7. Check for voltage at the heater during a cold start.
