Fuel Pump "B" Low Flow / Performance

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

Fuel pump "B" is running but not delivering the flow the module expects. The circuit is not being blamed - this is a measurement of what actually arrives. A blocked filter and a tired pump produce the same reading, and the filter is far cheaper to eliminate.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Check the fuel filter and when it was last changed. It is by far the cheapest thing here and a very common cause.
  2. Note when the symptom appears. A fault that only shows under load or at high speed is the classic signature of a supply that cannot keep up.
  3. Perform a voltage drop test on the pump supply and earth. A pump running on reduced voltage delivers reduced flow while testing as electrically sound.
  4. Check the fuel pressure against specification, both at idle and under load.
  5. Avoid running the tank very low. The pump is cooled by the fuel around it, and habitually running near empty shortens its life.
