Intake Air Heater "B" Circuit Range/Performance

Severity
Low
Driving
Drivable — book it in

Intake air heater "B" is drawing current but not the amount expected. Usually part of the element has failed, or a corroded high-current connection is limiting what reaches it - either way the air is being warmed less than the module intended.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Inspect the high-current terminals for corrosion and heat discolouration. A tight, clean connection matters more here than on almost any other circuit.
  2. Test on a genuinely cold engine. In warm weather a diesel will usually start acceptably without the intake heater, which is why these faults go unnoticed until winter.
  3. Check the fuse or fusible link and the relay. These circuits carry very high current and their connections suffer for it.
  4. Inspect the heater terminals for corrosion and heat damage.
  5. Measure the heater element resistance against specification.
  6. Check for voltage at the heater during a cold start.
