ECM/PCM Power Relay Sense Circuit High

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

A fault in the sense circuit for the engine control module's power relay - a high reading, usually a short to voltage, or the relay not releasing. This is the feedback wire the module uses to check whether the relay actually did what it was told. The module commanded the relay and cannot confirm the result, so it will not trust its own supply.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Check whether the reading persists with the relay removed. That separates the relay from the wiring.
  2. Swap the relay with an identical one from elsewhere in the box and see whether the fault follows it. It costs nothing and is the fastest test available.
  3. Inspect the relay socket for corrosion, heat damage and spread terminals - a discoloured socket means the relay has been running hot.
  4. Check the fuse for the circuit.
  5. Check the fuse box for water ingress, particularly if it is mounted low or in the engine bay.
  6. Check the wiring between the module and the relay.
