Intake Air Heater Control Circuit

A fault in the intake air heater control circuit. On a diesel, a heater element warms the incoming air so the engine starts and runs cleanly when cold. A fault here goes unnoticed in warm weather and becomes obvious on the first cold morning.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Test on a genuinely cold engine - in warm weather a diesel will usually start acceptably without it.
  2. Check the fuse or fusible link and the relay. These circuits carry very high current and their connections suffer for it.
  3. Inspect the heater terminals for corrosion and heat damage.
  4. Measure the heater element resistance against specification.
