Generator Field/F Terminal Circuit

Severity

Driving
Drivable — book it in

A fault in the generator field or F-terminal circuit. The field winding is what the regulator varies to control how much the alternator charges. A fault here usually means the alternator is stuck at full output or at none, so expect either overcharging or a flat battery rather than something subtle.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Measure charging voltage at the battery to see which way the fault has gone. Overcharging is the more urgent of the two - read the overcharging warning before continuing to drive.
  2. Inspect the connector at the alternator for corrosion and heat damage.
  3. Check the wiring between the module and the alternator.
  4. Worn brushes are a common cause on a high-mileage alternator and are repairable on some units rather than requiring a replacement.
  5. Check the alternator earth connections.
