Power Steering Control Circuit

Severity
Critical
Driving
Drive only to a garage

A fault in the power steering control circuit - a general fault, usually a wiring, connector or actuator problem. On a vehicle with electric or electrically assisted steering, this is the circuit that controls the assistance. If it fails, the steering becomes very heavy - the car remains steerable, but it takes far more effort than the driver expects, and that is most noticeable at parking speeds.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. If the steering has already gone heavy, stop somewhere safe rather than continuing. Assistance that has dropped out once can drop out again.
  2. Check battery voltage and the terminals. Electric power steering draws a large current and is one of the first things to drop out on a weak supply.
  3. Check the fuse or fusible link for the steering circuit.
  4. Inspect the connector at the steering unit for corrosion and water.
  5. Read all codes - a steering module code alongside this one points at the unit rather than the circuit.

Read this code from your own car

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
