Intake Manifold Tuning Valve Control Circuit/Open (Bank 1)

Severity
Medium
Driving
Drivable — book it in

A fault in the intake manifold tuning valve control circuit on bank 1 - an open circuit, usually a broken wire or a failed solenoid winding. The module cannot switch the tuning valve, so the intake stays in one configuration and the engine loses part of its power delivery.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Check the vacuum hoses first on a vacuum-operated system. A split or disconnected hose is the most common cause and the cheapest to fix.
  2. Check the flap or linkage moves freely. Carbon seizing the mechanism is very common on a high-mileage engine, particularly a diesel used for short journeys.
  3. Measure the solenoid winding resistance against specification.
  4. Inspect the connector for corrosion.
  5. Be aware that a broken flap inside the manifold can be drawn into the engine on some designs. If the linkage feels loose or disconnected, have it inspected rather than ignored.
