Starter Relay Circuit

Severity
Medium
Driving
Drivable — book it in

A fault in the starter relay circuit. The relay is what carries the heavy current to the starter motor, and the module controls it with a light circuit. A fault here usually means the engine will not crank at all - and because the fault is in a control circuit rather than the starter itself, the starter is often perfectly good.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Swap the relay with an identical one elsewhere in the box and see whether the fault follows it. It costs nothing and is the fastest test available.
  2. Inspect the relay socket for corrosion, heat damage and spread terminals.
  3. Check the fuses for the starter circuit.
  4. Check the fuse box for water ingress.
  5. Check the battery and its terminals before blaming the relay - a flat battery produces the same single click.
