Generator Field/F Terminal Circuit High

Severity
High
Driving
Drivable — book it in

The generator field circuit is reading high - typically shorted to voltage or a lost earth. The regulator cannot control the alternator's output properly, so charging voltage will be wrong in one direction or the other.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Measure charging voltage at the battery first. If it is high, stop driving and read the overcharging guidance - a cooked battery and damaged modules cost far more than the repair.
  2. Disconnect at the alternator and check whether the high reading persists at the harness.
  3. Inspect the connector for corrosion and heat damage.
  4. Check the alternator earth before condemning the unit.
  5. Follow the harness looking for chafe damage near the engine.
