Exhaust Gas Recirculation Control Circuit Low

Severity

Driving
Drivable — book it in

The voltage on the EGR control circuit is low - the circuit is shorted to earth or open. The module drives the EGR valve and monitors what the circuit does in response; a reading pinned low means the circuit is not behaving like a working actuator, so the module has disabled EGR control and set this code.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Unplug the EGR valve and measure the circuit at the harness side. If the low reading persists with the valve disconnected, the fault is in the wiring, not the valve.
  2. Inspect the connector for corrosion, spread pins and melted plastic.
  3. Measure the actuator winding resistance against specification.
  4. Follow the harness to the valve looking for chafe points near hot or moving parts.
  5. Clear the code and see whether it returns immediately or only after driving. An immediate return points at a hard short; an intermittent return points at chafed insulation or a loose pin.

Read this code from your own car

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
