Exhaust Gas Recirculation Throttle Position Control Range/Performance

The EGR throttle circuit is electrically sound but the throttle is not reaching or holding the position the module commands. On a diesel this is usually soot: the plate builds up deposits around its edge, becomes stiff, and no longer moves through its full travel.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Remove the EGR throttle body and check the plate for soot. Cleaning is often the whole repair on a high-mileage diesel.
  2. Compare commanded position against actual position on the live data screen through a full sweep.
  3. Check whether the manufacturer specifies an adaptation reset after cleaning. Many modules learn the stiff, dirty travel limits and keep using them until reset.
  4. Measure the wiring for high resistance if the plate is clean and moves freely.
  5. Replace the actuator only after cleaning and adaptation reset have both been tried.
