Fan 1 Control Circuit

A fault in the control circuit for cooling fan 1. Vehicles often use more than one fan, or more than one speed, so this names which circuit the module could not control.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Watch the temperature gauge in slow traffic and stop if it climbs. A fan fault shows itself when the car is stationary and clears at speed, because airflow through the radiator does the fan's job - that pattern is the clearest evidence available and costs nothing to observe.
  2. Check whether the fan runs at all when the engine is hot or the air conditioning is on.
  3. Check the fuse and swap the relay with an identical one from elsewhere in the box.
  4. Inspect the connector and the fan earth for corrosion.
  5. Check for debris in the fan and that it spins freely with the engine off and cool.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
