Evaporative Emission System Vent Control Circuit Shorted

Severity
Low
Driving
Drivable — book it in

The vent control circuit is shorted. Depending on where the short is, the vent may be held closed - which stops the tank breathing and can make the pump cut off repeatedly when you try to fill up.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Note whether the tank is difficult to fill, or hisses when the cap is opened. Both point to a vent held closed.
  2. Disconnect the valve and check whether the short persists at the harness.
  3. Inspect the vent valve and its filter underneath the vehicle. Corrosion and blockage are the two common causes, and insect nests in the vent filter are a genuine and frequent one.
  4. Check the connector for corrosion and water - this valve takes constant road spray.
  5. Measure the valve winding resistance against specification.
  6. Check whether the valve opens and closes when commanded.
  7. Note that EVAP monitors only run in particular conditions of fuel level and temperature, so confirming a repair can take several journeys.
