Evaporative Emission System Purge Control Valve Circuit

Severity
Low
Driving
Drivable — book it in

A fault in the evaporative emissions purge control valve circuit. The EVAP system captures fuel vapour from the tank in a charcoal canister, and this valve lets the engine draw that vapour in and burn it. It is meant to open only when the engine can cope with the extra fuel.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Note whether the car is hard to start straight after refuelling. That symptom is close to diagnostic for a purge valve stuck open, and it costs nothing to observe.
  2. Check the purge hoses for splits and disconnection.
  3. Measure the valve winding resistance against specification.
  4. Inspect the connector for corrosion.
  5. Check whether the valve holds vacuum when closed. A valve that leaks with no power applied is stuck open, and that is what causes the hard starting.
