Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve "A" Circuit Shorted

Severity
Low
Driving
Drivable — book it in

The circuit for secondary air injection switching valve "A" is shorted. Depending on where the short is, the valve may be held open, held closed, or simply uncontrollable. A valve held open lets air into the exhaust continuously, which has consequences beyond the emissions system.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Disconnect the valve and check whether the short persists at the harness. If it does, the fault is in the wiring rather than the valve.
  2. Measure the valve winding resistance against specification.
  3. Inspect the harness where it passes near the exhaust or a heat shield - this is the most common place for a short on this circuit.
  4. Inspect the connector for corrosion bridging pins.
  5. If a fuse keeps blowing, find the short before fitting another one.
