Turbo/Super Charger Overboost Condition

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The turbocharger or supercharger is producing more boost than the module allows. This is a protective code: too much boost raises cylinder pressure beyond what the engine was designed for, and the module cuts power to prevent damage. The engine will drop into a reduced-power mode, often abruptly and often just as you accelerate hard.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Be aware that power can be cut abruptly. Avoid overtaking and motorway slip roads until this is fixed - the cut arrives exactly when you ask for full throttle.
  2. Check the boost control hoses for splits and disconnection.
  3. Check the wastegate actuator moves freely, and on a diesel that the variable-vane mechanism is not seized with soot.
  4. Ask whether the vehicle has been remapped or has a boost controller fitted. These raise boost past the module's limit and set this code by design.
  5. Do not keep driving hard with overboost. Sustained excess boost damages pistons, head gaskets and the turbo itself.
