Engine Shutoff Solenoid

Severity
High
Driving
Drivable — book it in

A fault with the engine shutoff solenoid. On a diesel this solenoid is what cuts the fuel supply when you turn the key off - a diesel has no ignition to switch, so stopping it means stopping its fuel. Depending on how the fault falls, the engine may refuse to start, or may keep running after the key is removed.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. If the engine will not stop when the key is turned off, you can normally stall it: with the vehicle stationary and the handbrake on, select a high gear and let the clutch out against the brakes. That is a way of stopping it safely, not a repair.
  2. Check the fuse and relay for the solenoid circuit before anything else.
  3. Check for battery voltage at the solenoid with the ignition on and again with it off.
  4. Measure the solenoid winding resistance against specification.
  5. Inspect the connector for corrosion.
