Engine Overspeed Condition

Severity
Medium
Driving
Drivable — book it in

The engine has been turned faster than its rev limit. The module records this because over-revving can damage valves, pistons and bearings. In the great majority of cases the cause is a mis-selected gear on a manual car - selecting a much lower gear than intended and letting the clutch out spins the engine well past its limit before the driver can react.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Think back to when it happened. This code almost always follows a specific event, and if you remember a mis-shift, that is the explanation.
  2. Listen for any new noise, and check the oil level and condition. A serious over-rev can damage valves or bearings, and that would show as a noise or a misfire rather than as another code.
  3. Read all codes. Misfire or compression-related codes appearing at the same time would suggest actual damage.
  4. Check for transmission codes if you were not driving hard - an unintended downshift is the other plausible cause.
  5. If nothing sounds or feels different, clear the code and see whether it returns. A one-off incident will not.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
