Turbo/Super Charger Wastegate Solenoid "B" Range/Performance

Severity
Medium
Driving
Drive only to a garage

Wastegate solenoid "B" is electrically sound but boost is not following what was commanded. That points at the mechanism rather than the circuit - a seized actuator, a soot-clogged variable-vane mechanism, or a leaking hose.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Check the hoses first. A split or disconnected boost control hose is the most common cause and the cheapest to fix.
  2. Check the wastegate actuator moves freely. On a diesel with a variable-vane turbo, soot seizing the mechanism is extremely common on a car used mainly for short journeys.
  3. Measure the solenoid winding resistance against specification.
  4. Inspect the connector for corrosion and heat damage.
  5. Watch commanded against actual boost on the live data screen through an acceleration.
