Injector Circuit/Open

Severity
High
Driving
Short journeys only

A fault in an injector circuit, without the module naming which cylinder. The injector is the valve that sprays fuel into the engine, and the module opens it by switching its winding; an open or shorted circuit means that cylinder gets no fuel, or the wrong amount.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Read all codes. A misfire code for the same cylinder alongside this one confirms which cylinder is not firing.
  2. Measure the injector winding resistance and compare it with a known-good injector on the same engine. Comparing against its neighbours is often more useful than a specification.
  3. Swap the connector - not the injector - with a neighbouring cylinder and see whether the fault follows. If it does, the fault is in the injector; if it stays, it is in the wiring.
  4. Inspect the connector for corrosion, and for oil or fuel that has crept in through a failed seal.
  5. Check the injector harness for chafe and heat damage. It sits directly on top of a hot engine and gets disturbed at every service.

Read this code from your own car

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
