Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch "B" Circuit Intermittent

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The signal from throttle or pedal position sensor "B" is intermittent - dropping out and returning. Intermittent faults on a throttle circuit are particularly unpleasant because the reduced-power mode can engage and clear while driving.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Treat this as urgent. Intermittent power loss in traffic is a genuine hazard.
  2. Unplug and inspect the connector, looking for spread terminals and a latch that does not click home.
  3. With the engine idling, gently flex the harness near the sensor and watch the live position value for dropouts.
  4. Trace the harness for chafing where it crosses brackets or the bulkhead.
  5. Fix the connection and re-test before replacing the sensor - intermittents are far more often wiring than components.
