Direct Ozone Reduction Catalyst Temperature Sensor Circuit

Severity
Low
Driving
No driving restriction

A fault in the direct ozone reduction catalyst temperature sensor circuit. A direct ozone reduction catalyst is a coating on the radiator, not part of the exhaust. Air passing through the radiator is converted from ground-level ozone into oxygen, so the vehicle cleans a little of the air it drives through. It is fitted to a small number of very low emission vehicles and has no effect on how the engine runs.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Inspect the connector and wiring at the front of the vehicle. This equipment sits behind the grille and takes stone strikes, water and road salt.
  2. Ask whether the vehicle has had front-end damage or a radiator replaced. A replacement radiator without the coating, or with the sensor left disconnected, produces exactly this.
  3. Check the reference voltage and earth at the sensor.
  4. Check the radiator face is clear of debris.
  5. Note that this system has no effect on how the engine runs, so it can be dealt with at convenience unless an emissions test is due.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
