Evaporative Emission System Vent Valve Stuck Closed

Severity
Medium
Driving
Drivable — book it in

The evaporative emission vent valve is stuck closed. This one matters more than most EVAP faults, and it is rated higher than its siblings for that reason. The valve is what lets the fuel tank breathe: with it shut, air cannot enter as fuel is drawn out, so a vacuum builds in the tank. That starves the fuel pump on a long run, and it makes refuelling difficult because the displaced air has nowhere to go - the filler nozzle keeps clicking off after a few seconds.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Open the fuel cap and listen. A strong rush of air inward means the tank is in vacuum, which confirms this code without any tools at all.
  2. Check the vent line and the canister's fresh air inlet for blockage - mud, insect nests and road debris all do it, and none of them need a new valve.
  3. Inspect the connector and its wiring before condemning the component. Everything in this system lives under the vehicle in the path of road salt and spray, and a corroded connector produces these codes far more often than a failed part does.
  4. Command the valve open with a scan tool and listen for it to click.
  5. Do not ignore this one because it is an emissions code. A tank held in vacuum can starve the fuel pump, and in bad cases it can deform the tank itself.
