Evaporative Emission System Switching Valve Control Circuit Low

Severity
Low
Driving
Drivable — book it in

The control circuit for the evaporative emission switching valve is reading low, which normally means a short to earth. This valve directs where the leak detection pump sends its air - through the system under test, or through a calibrated reference orifice the module uses to know what a genuine small leak looks like. Without it the leak test has nothing to compare against and cannot run.

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Inspect the connector and its wiring before condemning the component. Everything in this system lives under the vehicle in the path of road salt and spray, and a corroded connector produces these codes far more often than a failed part does.
  2. Measure the valve winding's resistance against specification. Open or shorted is conclusive.
  3. Check whether other EVAP components report faults at the same time. Several at once points at the shared fuse, feed or earth rather than at several failed valves.
  4. Command the valve with a scan tool and listen for it to click.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
