P2412
Fuel Cap Sensor/Switch Circuit Intermittent/Erratic
- Severity
- Low
- Driving
- No driving restriction
The fuel cap sensor signal drops out or changes state when it should not. The filler area collects water from every wash and every rainstorm, so its connector corrodes more readily than most.
Possible causes
- CommonCorroded or wet connector at the filler neck
- CommonCap that seats inconsistently, or is sometimes not clicked home
- PossibleChafed wiring in the filler housing
- PossibleFailing switch
What you might notice
- Check engine light on
- Failed emissions test
- Occasionally a smell of fuel
- Usually nothing else - EVAP faults rarely affect how the car drives
What to check, in order
- Refit the cap properly and see whether the code returns. An intermittent code here often reflects an intermittent driver rather than an intermittent fault.
- Open the filler flap and look for standing water and corrosion around the connector.
- Wiggle-test the connector with live data on screen.
- Replace the switch last, after the cap and the connector have been ruled out.
Read this code from your own car
Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
