P2407
Evaporative Emission System Leak Detection Pump Sense Circuit Intermittent/Erratic
- Severity
- Low
- Driving
- No driving restriction
The leak detection pump's sense signal drops out or jumps about. As with any intermittent electrical fault the cause is far more likely to be a connection than a component, and on an underbody harness that is close to a certainty.
Possible causes
- CommonCorroded connector at the pump - the usual answer
- CommonChafed or road-damaged wiring
- CommonWater sitting in the connector
- PossiblePoor earth
- PossibleFailing sensing element inside the pump
What you might notice
- Check engine light on
- Failed emissions test
- Occasionally a smell of fuel
- Usually nothing else - EVAP faults rarely affect how the car drives
What to check, in order
- Unplug the connector and look inside for green corrosion and water. This is the single most productive thing to do with this code.
- Wiggle the harness with live data displayed. An intermittent fault you can provoke by hand is nearly solved.
- Repack the connector with the correct grease once it is clean and dry, or it will corrode again over the next winter.
- Replace the pump assembly last.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
