Fuel Fired Heater Performance

Severity
Low
Driving
No driving restriction

The fuel-fired heater is running but not performing as expected - it is not producing the heat the module expects, or is taking too long to light. A sooted burner from repeated short runs is the usual reason.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Check the battery. These heaters draw a large current when starting and will refuse to run on a weak battery - which is also exactly when you want them.
  2. Read all codes. The heater is often disabled because of another fault rather than because it has failed.
  3. Check the heater's own exhaust and air intake for blockage.
  4. Ask how it is used. Repeated very short runs soot the burner up, and many of these heaters have a service routine to clear it.
  5. Check the fuel supply to the heater, which is usually a separate pump and line from the tank.
