Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) Fuel Vapor Temperature Sensor Circuit

Severity
Low
Driving
No driving restriction

A fault in the EVAP fuel vapour temperature sensor circuit. The evaporative emissions system captures fuel vapour from the tank, and the module uses vapour temperature to interpret its leak tests correctly - vapour pressure changes with temperature, so without it a healthy system can look like a leak.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Compare the reported vapour temperature with ambient on a vehicle that has stood overnight - they should be close.
  2. Inspect the connector for corrosion and water. This sensor is mounted under the vehicle and takes constant road spray.
  3. Check the wiring underneath for damage, including rodent damage.
  4. Check the reference voltage and earth before condemning the sensor.
  5. Note that EVAP monitors only run in particular conditions - fuel level, temperature and time since start - so testing this may take several journeys.
