Lost Communication With Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Control Module
- Severity
- High
- Driving
- Short journeys only
The control module has stopped receiving messages from the instrument panel cluster (IPC) - the instrument cluster. The cluster is not just gauges: it is where nearly every warning lamp in the car is displayed. With it missing or blank you have no speedometer, no fuel gauge, and no warning if the engine overheats, loses oil pressure or charges badly. The car may drive perfectly while doing something expensive that you cannot see.
Possible causes
- CommonLow battery voltage or a discharged battery, dropping modules off the bus
- CommonBlown fuse or corroded earth on the supply to the cluster
- CommonDamaged, chafed or corroded bus wiring behind the dashboard
- CommonConnector behind the cluster disturbed during dashboard or stereo work
- PossibleFailed cluster
- PossibleCluster not coded to the vehicle after replacement
What you might notice
- Gauges dead, stuck or reading nonsense
- Warning lights all on, or all off
- No speedometer
- Odometer or trip display blank
- Cluster illumination out
What to check, in order
- Recognise what has been lost. Without warning lamps you will get no notice of overheating or low oil pressure, so keep journeys short and check the temperature gauge and oil level by other means until it is fixed.
- Driving without a working speedometer is an offence in most jurisdictions and an inspection failure in nearly all of them.
- Check battery voltage and state of charge before anything else. A weak or failing battery drops modules off the bus and sets lost-communication codes with no wiring fault at all - this is the single most common false lead in this whole family.
- Check whether this code is current or historic, and whether a battery disconnection, jump start or recent dashboard work explains it.
- Check the fuses and earths for the cluster, then the connector behind it. A partially seated connector after stereo or dashboard work is a very common cause.
- Note how many U-codes are stored. Several at once points at battery, earth or bus wiring.
- A replacement cluster normally has to be coded to the vehicle, including the odometer reading. That is regulated work in most jurisdictions - do not treat it as a plug-in swap.
Read this code from your own car
Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
