Lost Communication With Tire Pressure Monitor Module

Severity
Medium
Driving
Drivable — book it in

The control module has stopped receiving messages from the tyre pressure monitor module. Tyre pressure monitoring is not working, so you will get no warning of a slow puncture or an under-inflated tyre. The tyres themselves are unaffected - what you have lost is the warning, not the pressure.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Check all four tyre pressures with a gauge, including the spare, and keep checking them by hand until this is repaired. That restores the thing you have actually lost.
  2. Check battery voltage and state of charge before anything else. A weak or failing battery drops modules off the bus and sets lost-communication codes with no wiring fault at all - this is the single most common false lead in this whole family.
  3. Ask whether tyres, wheels or sensors were changed recently. The system usually needs relearning to the new sensors, and an unconfigured system is far more common than a failed module.
  4. Check the fuses, earths and connector for the tyre pressure monitor module.
  5. Distinguish this from a low sensor battery. Individual sensor batteries last a handful of years and their failure sets a different code - this one says the module itself is not answering.

Read this code from your own car

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
