Software Incompatibility with Battery Energy Control Module B
- Severity
- Critical
- Driving
- Drive only to a garage
The software in battery energy control module "B" is not compatible with the rest of the vehicle. This module is part of the high-voltage propulsion system on a hybrid or electric vehicle, and these systems fail safe: when the vehicle cannot confirm that its high-voltage components are correctly matched, it shuts the high-voltage system down. Expect no drive at all, or a hybrid running on the engine alone.
Possible causes
- CommonBattery energy control module "B" replaced but never programmed or coded to this vehicle
- CommonUsed module fitted from a different vehicle or battery specification
- CommonSoftware update interrupted, often by 12 volt battery voltage falling during programming
- CommonTraction battery pack or module replaced without the matching configuration
- CommonOne module updated while others were left at their old versions
- PossibleWrong part number for the vehicle's battery chemistry or capacity
What you might notice
- Vehicle will not move, or moves only on the engine
- High-voltage system warning message
- Vehicle will not charge
- Traction battery state of charge display blank or implausible
- Fault present since work on the hybrid system
What to check, in order
- Ask what was done. Traction battery, inverter or drive motor work immediately before this appeared is the explanation.
- Read the software and part numbers of every high-voltage module and compare them against the vehicle's specification.
- Check the 12 volt battery. If a programming session was interrupted, a falling 12 volt supply is usually why - and re-running it needs a battery support unit connected.
- Do not replace the module. This is a configuration mismatch, and high-voltage modules are among the most expensive parts on the vehicle to buy twice.
- This needs manufacturer-level programming and, for traction battery work, manufacturer-specific configuration.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
