Lost Communication With Heated Steering Wheel Module
- Severity
- Low
- Driving
- No driving restriction
The control module has stopped receiving messages from the heated steering wheel module. Heating, ventilation or air conditioning will not respond, and the system usually falls back to a fixed default setting. Nothing about the way the car drives is affected.
Possible causes
- CommonLow battery voltage or a discharged battery, dropping modules off the bus
- CommonBlown fuse or corroded earth on the supply to the heated steering wheel module
- CommonCorroded or water-ingressed connector - blocked drains soak footwell electrics
- PossibleDamaged, chafed or corroded bus wiring
- PossibleFailed module
- PossibleConnector disturbed during dashboard or heater work
What you might notice
- Climate control unresponsive or stuck on one setting
- Blower not working, or running at one fixed speed
- Temperature not adjustable
- Display blank
- Heated steering wheel inoperative
What to check, in order
- Check battery voltage and state of charge before anything else. A weak or failing battery drops modules off the bus and sets lost-communication codes with no wiring fault at all - this is the single most common false lead in this whole family.
- Check the fuses and earths for the heated steering wheel module.
- Look for water ingress. Blocked bulkhead and sunroof drains soak the footwell, and climate modules are often mounted right there.
- Ask whether the dashboard or heater has been worked on recently. A partially seated connector is a common cause.
- Note how many U-codes are stored. Several at once points at battery, earth or bus wiring.
Read this code from your own car
Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
