Ignition Coil "J" Primary Control Circuit Low

Severity
High
Driving
Short journeys only

The control circuit for ignition coil "J" is reading low. The module switches the coil's primary winding on and off to fire the plug, and when it checks that circuit it sees a lower voltage than it expects - usually because the control wire is shorted to earth, or because the coil's primary winding has failed short. "Low" describes the voltage on the wire, not a weak spark. The coil letter is the manufacturer's designation and does not necessarily correspond to the cylinder number - the vehicle's own documentation says which is which, and a misfire code stored alongside will usually name the cylinder directly.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Unplug the coil and measure from the control pin on the harness side to earth with the ignition off. A reading near zero ohms means the wire is shorted and the coil is not the problem - fitting a new coil will change nothing.
  2. Measure the coil's primary resistance and compare it with specification. A shorted primary reads well below the specified value.
  3. Follow the harness from the coil back towards the module and look for chafing. The run across the top of the engine gets hot, moves with the engine and rubs.
  4. Swap the suspect coil with one from a neighbouring cylinder and see whether the fault follows it. This is the single most effective test available and it costs nothing - but only do it on engines where the coils are genuinely interchangeable.
  5. Check whether several coils report the same fault. That points at the shared harness or a module driver bank rather than at several coils failing at once.
  6. Do not order a control module on the strength of this code. A failed driver inside the module does produce it, but it is the last thing to suspect, not the first.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
